3 tips to prepare your home before selling

When you’re considering selling your home, it’s important to make it as enticing to buyers as possible.

You don’t need to spend tons of time preparing, but be aware that a clean and tidy home that’s in good condition will inspire confidence. So why not put the odds in your favour so your home sells faster?

Here are a few simple but effective tips to prepare your home for selling.

  1. Depersonalize

A lived-in home is nice, but it’s better to give visitors a chance to imagine living in it themselves. This means putting away stray objects but also depersonalizing the space:

  • Reduce the number of knickknacks and plants
  • Hide the bathroom rug and personal hygiene products
  • Take pictures off the refrigerator
  • Put away unneeded electronic devices
  • Hide dishcloths

“This will greatly improve the property’s appearance,” explains Martin Desfossés, a DuProprio real estate coach. “It will make it easier for potential buyers to assess the space available and to imagine how they would arrange their own personal belongings.”

  1. Purge

Once you’ve put away personal items, check whether any rooms in your home look overcrowded. Move, donate or throw out bulky furniture or objects: this will make the property look more spacious and appealing.

  1. Spruce things up

Large-scale work is rarely necessary. But the following small touches can make the difference between selling fast and at a good price, and a drawn-out selling process involving price reductions:

  • Repair leaky faucets
  • Change burned-out light bulbs
  • Repair doors that don’t shut properly
  • Paint any tired-looking walls

We also ask that, before the DuProprio representative arrives, you open all the curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. This is to ensure top-quality photos. But this tip also applies when you are expecting visitors. A brightly lit room is more welcoming than a gloomy one.
