8 tips for smokers to help prevent fires

Did you know that cigarettes are one of the main causes of fires in Quebec? That’s why your home insurance premiums could increase if there’s a smoker under your roof! Here are 8 tips from the La Capitale blog to help prevent fires caused from smoking.

1. Make sure your home is equipped with smoke detectors in good condition.

The detectors should be:

  • Less than 10 years old
  • Located near the bedrooms
  • Equipped with batteries that are verified twice a year (when DST ends in the fall and begins in the spring) and replaced as soon as necessary

2. Use deep and stable ashtrays.

You should use ashtrays to putt out stubs at home, both indoors and outdoors.

3. Don’t use flower beds or potted plants as ashtrays.

The soil is often highly flammable.

4. Always keep an eye on lit cigarettes.

Even if the cigarette is resting in an ashtray, put it out if you must leave the room.

5. Pour water over the stubs before disposing of your ashes in the trash.

6. Remember that mattresses and most fabrics catch fire very quickly.

That’s why you should never smoke in bed and avoid smoking on couches, especially when you’re tired or under the influence of medication or alcohol. You could fall asleep with a lit cigarette in your hand and cause a fire.

7. Don’t smoke near flammable products…

…especially during renovations. Ideally, you should smoke outside until the work is done.

8. Protect the children

Keep all smoking products away from their reach.
